では済まない

N1Obligation

N1 · Obligation · noun/plain form + では済まない

Meaning

will not be settled by; cannot end with

Structure

noun/plain form + では済まない

Explanation

では済まない means the matter cannot be settled merely by the preceding action or state; further responsibility or consequence remains.

Usage

It is common with accidents, responsibility, apologies, and compensation.

Example

個人情報を漏らした以上、謝罪だけでは済まない。

Since personal information was leaked, an apology alone will not be enough.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with simple 終わらない; it emphasizes responsibility or consequence.

Memory Tip

When something cannot simply be left at that, use では済まない.
