JLPT N1 Grammar

といわず~といわず

N1全面

N1 · 全面 · noun + といわず + noun + といわず

Meaning

both...and; everywhere

Structure

noun + といわず + noun + といわず

Explanation

Lists two representative parts, times, or ranges to show that the whole relevant range is that way.

Usage

Often describes states that apply to the whole body, everywhere, day and night, and similar ranges.

Example

雨の中を歩いたので、服といわず靴といわず全部びしょ濡れになった。

Because I walked in the rain, everything was soaked, clothes and shoes alike.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for ordinary two-item listing; it emphasizes the entire range is affected.

Memory Tip

Mention two points, but really mean the whole range.
