とき means when an action, state, or period occurs.

Use のとき after nouns and なとき after na-adjectives.

子どものとき、よく海で泳ぎました。

When I was a child, I often swam in the sea.

The form before とき affects timing, as in 行くとき vs 行ったとき.

Memorize “とき” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
