ところが

N2Contrast / Concession

N2 · Contrast / Concession · ところが + 句子

Meaning

however; but then

Structure

ところが + 句子

Explanation

ところが appears at the start of a sentence and introduces a result contrary to expectation.

Usage

It is common in narrative turns.

Example

電車に間に合うと思いました。ところが、駅に着いた時にはもう出ていました。

I thought I would catch the train. However, it had already left when I arrived.

Common Mistake

It is not a noun connector; it turns the sentence direction.

Memory Tip

Memorize “plain form + ところが” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
