Structure

verb辞书形 / ない形 + ところだった

Explanation

Shows that something almost happened, but did not actually happen.

Usage

Common for nearly making a mistake, nearly forgetting, nearly missing something, and so on.

Example

目覚ましを止めてまた寝てしまい、会議に遅れるところだった。

I turned off the alarm and fell asleep again, so I almost arrived late to the meeting.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for an event that actually happened; it means 'almost, but not.'

Memory Tip

The foot reached the edge, but did not fall.
