even if; even though

Structure

plain form + ところで

Explanation

Usage

It differs from topic-changing ところで.

Example

今さら謝ったところで、壊れた信頼はすぐには戻りません。

Even if you apologize now, broken trust will not immediately return.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with sentence-initial ところで meaning 'by the way.'

Memory Tip

Memorize “plain form + ところで” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
