として indicates role, qualification, standpoint, or use.

It is common when introducing roles or evaluation standpoints.

彼は通訳として会議に参加しました。

He joined the meeting as an interpreter.

Do not confuse it with quotation と.

Memorize “noun + として” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
