JLPT N3 Grammar

とても~ない

N3不可能

N3 · 不可能 · とても + potential-form verbない / nai-form verb

Meaning

cannot possibly; absolutely cannot

Structure

とても + potential-form verbない / nai-form verb

Explanation

Shows that something is completely impossible due to degree, ability, or circumstances.

Usage

Often used with negative potential forms and is stronger than simple できない.

Example

この量の宿題は、一晩ではとても終わらない。

This amount of homework cannot possibly be finished in one night.

Common Mistake

Do not omit the negative; とても alone can mean 'very,' but this pattern requires negation.

Memory Tip

The degree is too much, so it cannot be done.
