内容/名称 + と言う

と言う can quote speech and can also state a name or what something is called.

When stating a name, 〜と言います is common.

これは日本語で「改札」と言います。

In Japanese, this is called kaisatsu.

For hearsay, と言われている or そうだ is often better; do not use と言う for everything.

Memorize “〜と言う” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
