JLPT N4 Grammar

と(条件)

N4Condition

N4 · Condition · verb辞书形 + と

Meaning

when; if, with a natural result

Structure

verb辞书形 + と

Explanation

Conditional と shows that when the first action happens, the second result follows naturally, habitually, or inevitably.

Usage

The following clause is often a natural result, mechanical response, habit, or inevitable result.

Example

このボタンを押すと、ドアが開きます。

When you press this button, the door opens.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse it with と for listing nouns; conditional と follows a verb clause.

Memory Tip

Press the button, and the door opens; that natural chain is conditional と.
