どうして

どうして asks for a reason and means 'why.'

It can sound direct; なぜ or どうしてですか may suit more formal or careful speech.

どうして昨日来ませんでしたか。

Why didn't you come yesterday?

どうして can also ask how, but the beginner core use is why.

When you see どうして, first think 'why.'
