JLPT N2 Grammar

どころか

N2Contrast / Concession

N2 · Contrast / Concession · plain form + どころか / noun + どころか

Meaning

far from; let alone; on the contrary

Structure

plain form + どころか / noun + どころか

Explanation

どころか strongly rejects the first idea and shows that reality is far from it, sometimes the opposite.

Usage

It is used as “far from A, even B...” or “not A, but rather B.”

Example

週末は休むどころか、徹夜で資料を作った。

Far from resting on the weekend, I stayed up all night preparing materials.

Common Mistake

Do not use it as an ordinary contrast; it is much stronger than でも or しかし.

Memory Tip

The first idea is overturned; the second part is the reality.
