Explanation

The ない form is the plain negative verb form and the base for many negative patterns.

Usage

For godan verbs, change the final sound to the a-row and add ない, as in 行く→行かない.

Example

朝ご飯を食べないで学校へ行きました。

I went to school without eating breakfast.

Common Mistake

The negative of ある is ない, not あらない.

Memory Tip

Start with representative forms: 行かない, 食べない, しない, 来ない.
