なんという expresses strong exclamation, surprise, or evaluation.

It can be positive or negative.

なんという偶然でしょう。昨日話していた人に今日会いました。

What a coincidence. I met today the person we talked about yesterday.

Do not use it for flat statements; it is exclamatory.

A strong exclamatory “what/how.”
