JLPT N1 Grammar

にして

N1状態

N1 · 状態 · noun + にして

Meaning

at; in; both...and

Structure

noun + にして

Explanation

Can show that something occurs at a certain age, stage, or status, or that two identities or qualities coexist.

Usage

It appears often in advanced written style; judge from context whether it marks a stage or parallel qualities.

Example

彼は五十歳にして初めて海外で働く決心をした。

At the age of fifty, he decided for the first time to work overseas.

Common Mistake

Do not mechanically translate it as で; it often emphasizes 'only at this stage' or 'already at this stage.'

Memory Tip

Use a certain stage as the point of emphasis.
