Used in formal contexts with nouns such as 法律, 規則, 方針, 慣例, and 伝統.

大会は国際ルールに則って運営されます。

The tournament will be run in accordance with international rules.

Do not confuse it with the looser に合わせて; に則って stresses a normative basis.
