JLPT N1 Grammar

に足らない / に足りない

N1不足

N1 · 不足 · verb辞书形 / noun + に足らない / に足りない

Meaning

not worth; not enough to

Structure

verb辞书形 / noun + に足らない / に足りない

Explanation

Shows that the degree, value, or grounds are insufficient, not worth doing something or not enough for a judgment.

Usage

Common in evaluations such as 恐れるに足らない and 信頼するに足りない.

Example

一度の失敗だけで、その人の能力を否定するには足りない。

One failure alone is not enough to deny that person's ability.

Common Mistake

Do not equate it entirely with ordinary 足りない for quantity; this is often evaluative insufficiency.

Memory Tip

The reason or value has not reached the line.
