JLPT N2 Grammar

に過ぎない

N2Limitation

N2 · Limitation · noun / plain form + に過ぎない

Meaning

nothing more than; merely

Structure

noun / plain form + に過ぎない

Explanation

Shows that the degree, amount, or value is limited and does not go beyond the stated range.

Usage

Often used to downplay an evaluation or emphasize that something is only a part or minimum degree.

Example

これは私個人の意見に過ぎないので、参考程度にしてください。

This is nothing more than my personal opinion, so please treat it only as a reference.

Common Mistake

Do not treat it as identical to だけ; に過ぎない is more formal and often downplays the value.

Memory Tip

The range stops here; there is nothing more.
