のです is the more formal form of んです and explains background or reason.

Use なのです after nouns and na-adjectives.

今日は頭が痛いのです。

The thing is, I have a headache today.

Without explanatory context, frequent のです can sound over-explanatory.

のです is fuller and more written than んです.
