Meaning

the height of; utmost

Structure

noun + の極み

Explanation

Shows that a state or emotion reaches an extreme limit.

Usage

Formal and strongly evaluative; used with honor, luxury, resentment, rudeness, and similar nouns.

Example

説明もなく予定を変えるとは、無責任の極みだ。

Changing the plan without explanation is the height of irresponsibility.

Common Mistake

It is close to の至り, but 極み is often used for extreme positive or negative evaluation.

Memory Tip

Push a state to its extreme.
