JLPT N2 Grammar

はずではない

N2Inference / Appearance

N2 · Inference / Appearance · plain form + はずではない / noun + のはずではない / na-adjective + なはずではない

Meaning

is not supposed to; should not be the case

Structure

plain form + はずではない / noun + のはずではない / na-adjective + なはずではない

Explanation

Expresses that, based on the available information, something should not be in that state. It carries a nuance of mismatch with expectation.

Usage

Compared with はずがない, this form more often points to something being wrong relative to an arrangement or expectation.

Example

この資料は外部に出るはずではない。

This document is not supposed to leave the company.

Common Mistake

Do not attach a noun directly to はず; nouns normally take の before はず.

Memory Tip

はず is expectation; ではない denies that expected state.
