JLPT N2 Grammar

ばかりか

N2Parallel

N2 · Parallel · plain form + ばかりか / noun + ばかりか

Meaning

not only... but also

Structure

plain form + ばかりか / noun + ばかりか

Explanation

ばかりか means “not only A, but also B,” with the second point going further.

Usage

The second part is usually more surprising, serious, or emphatic than the first.

Example

彼は遅刻したばかりか、資料も忘れてきた。

He was not only late, but also forgot the materials.

Common Mistake

Do not make the two parts merely equal; ばかりか expects the second part to go further.

Memory Tip

A is already notable; B goes even further.
