JLPT N4 Grammar

〜ばかり

N4Other

N4 · Other · 〜ばかり

Meaning

just finished, something just occurred

Structure

〜ばかり

Explanation

ばかり after the た-form means something has just been done.

Usage

It reflects the speaker's feeling of recentness, not necessarily only a few minutes ago.

Example

日本に来たばかりで、まだ道がよく分かりません。

I have just come to Japan, so I still do not know the roads well.

Common Mistake

Do not confuse this with quantity-limiting ばかり; here it means just did.

Memory Tip

Memorize “〜ばかり” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
