Meaning

if... then it is all over

Structure

verbば形 + それまでだ / ta-form verb + らそれまでだ

Explanation

ばそれまでだ means that if a bad condition occurs, previous effort or assumptions become meaningless.

Usage

It is used to warn of risk or point out fragility.

Example

どんなに準備しても、本番で体調を崩せばそれまでだ。

No matter how much you prepare, it is all over if you get sick on the day.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for ordinary conditions; it means the result ruins everything.

Memory Tip

Once the bad condition happens, everything before it is wasted.
