ふりをする means pretending to be or do something that is not actually true.

It can describe intentional pretending, pretending not to know, pretending to sleep, and so on.

彼は答えを知っているのに、知らないふりをした。

He knew the answer but pretended not to.

Do not confuse it with naturally seeming like ようだ; this is intentional pretending.
