JLPT N1 Grammar

べからず

N1Obligation

N1 · Obligation · verb辞书形 + べからず / する → すべからず

Meaning

must not; do not

Structure

verb辞书形 + べからず / する → すべからず

Explanation

べからず is a formal written prohibition meaning “must not.”

Usage

It appears in signs, rules, and formal writing, not ordinary conversation.

Example

関係者以外、この部屋に入るべからず。

Unauthorized persons must not enter this room.

Common Mistake

Do not replace conversational してはいけない with it; it is very stiff.

Memory Tip

Think of べからず as the “do not” on a formal sign.
