ほうがいい gives advice and says one action is better.

Affirmative advice often uses the た-form; negative advice uses the ない form.

疲れているなら、今日は早く帰ったほうがいいです。

If you are tired, you should go home early today.

Do not confuse the advice use with the comparison use.

Memorize “ほうがいい” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
