Structure

まさか + 句子 / まさか〜とは思わなかった

Explanation

Shows that the speaker finds something very unexpected, unlikely, or hard to believe. It is common in surprised reactions.

Usage

Often used with negatives, questions, or とは思わなかった.

Example

まさかこんな場所で昔の友人に会うとは思わなかった。

I never imagined I would meet an old friend in a place like this.

Common Mistake

Do not treat まさか as ordinary 'maybe'; it carries strong surprise or disbelief.

Memory Tip

まさか has the feeling of 'No way! Really?'
