JLPT N5 Grammar

ます形

N5Other

N5 · Other · verb stem + ます

Meaning

the polite verb form base

Structure

verb stem + ます

Explanation

The ます form is the polite present or future affirmative verb form, common in everyday polite speech.

Usage

ます itself can refer to present or future; time words and context decide which one.

Example

毎朝、駅まで歩きます。

I walk to the station every morning.

Common Mistake

Do not add です after ます. The polite verb form is already polite.

Memory Tip

Learn stem + ます first, then extend it to ません and ました.
