JLPT N3 Grammar

むしろ

N3Comparison

N3 · Comparison · むしろ + 句子

Meaning

rather; if anything

Structure

むしろ + 句子

Explanation

Compares two views or situations and shows that the latter is more suitable, more accurate, or preferable.

Usage

Often used to correct an understanding or say 'not A, but rather B.'

Example

この部屋は狭いが、むしろ落ち着いて勉強できる。

This room is small, but if anything, it helps me study calmly.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for a plain contrast; むしろ should feel like choosing the latter after comparison.

Memory Tip

'Not that side, rather this side' is the feeling of むしろ.
