もしかしたら

N3Inference / Appearance

N3 · Inference / Appearance · もしかしたら + 句子

Meaning

perhaps; maybe

Structure

もしかしたら + 句子

Explanation

Shows that the speaker thinks something is possible but not certain. It often pairs with かもしれない.

Usage

Compared with たぶん, it often suggests a possibility that has occurred to the speaker.

Example

もしかしたら、電車が遅れているのかもしれません。

Maybe the train is delayed.

Common Mistake

Do not pair it with a statement that sounds too certain; it usually takes conjectural wording.

Memory Tip

Starting with もし hints that it is only a possibility.
