JLPT N2 Grammar

ものを

N2Contrast / Concession

N2 · Contrast / Concession · plain form + ものを

Meaning

although; if only

Structure

plain form + ものを

Explanation

Expresses regret, dissatisfaction, or blame about an outcome, often implying that things would have been better if someone had acted differently.

Usage

It carries emotion and often appears in monologue or blame, so it should be used carefully toward superiors.

Example

早く相談してくれれば助けたものを。

If only you had consulted me earlier, I could have helped.

Common Mistake

Do not read the final ものを as the ordinary object particle を; the whole phrase expresses regret.

Memory Tip

After ものを, the unspoken feeling is often 'what a shame.'
