practically the same as

noun + も同然だ

も同然だ means that although something is not formally the preceding noun, it is practically the same.

It is used for strong evaluation, either positive or negative.

この資料がなければ、調査は失敗したも同然だった。

Without this material, the investigation would have been practically a failure.

Do not use it for something literally identical; it means practically equivalent.

Different in form, almost the same in reality.
