verb意向形 + とする

Shows attempting to do something, or that an action is about to happen.

Depending on context, it can mean 'try to' or 'be about to.'

電車に乗ろうとしたとき、後ろから名前を呼ばれた。

When I was about to board the train, someone called my name from behind.

Do not confuse it with the volitional form alone; とする emphasizes attempt or the moment before action.

The action is just about to start, or one is trying to start it.
