JLPT N4 Grammar

ように(目的)

N4Purpose

N4 · Purpose · dictionary-form verb/ない形 + ように

Meaning

so that; in order that

Structure

dictionary-form verb/ない形 + ように

Explanation

ように means doing something so that a desired state can happen, often with potential, negative, or non-volitional verbs.

Usage

Compared with ために, ように suits ability, states, natural changes, and similar goals.

Example

忘れないように、手帳に書いておきます。

I will write it in my planner so I do not forget.

Common Mistake

Use ために for direct volitional actions; use ように for abilities, states, or avoiding something.

Memory Tip

ように feels like 'so that it becomes that way.'
