ように

N3Purpose

N3 · Purpose · verb辞书形/ない形 + ように

Meaning

so that; in order that

Structure

verb辞书形/ない形 + ように

Explanation

ように means acting so that a desired state happens, often with potential, negative, or non-volitional verbs.

Usage

Compared with direct-purpose ために, it leans toward state or ability goals.

Example

忘れないように、予定をカレンダーに入れました。

I added the schedule to my calendar so I would not forget.

Common Mistake

For one's direct intentional action, ために is often used.

Memory Tip

Memorize “dictionary-form verb/ない形 + ように” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
