JLPT N4 Grammar

らしい

N4Other

N4 · Other · noun/verb/adjective + らしい

Meaning

seems; typical of

Structure

noun/verb/adjective + らしい

Explanation

らしい can judge from heard information, or describe something as having typical qualities.

Usage

The hearsay use follows plain forms; the typical-quality use often follows nouns, as in 学生らしい.

Example

彼は来月結婚するらしいです。

It seems he is getting married next month.

Common Mistake

Do not treat hearsay らしい as identical to visual ようだ; らしい often involves reports or typicality.

Memory Tip

らしい feels like 'apparently' or 'typical of that.'
