JLPT N3 Grammar

わけではない

N3Negation

N3 · Negation · plain form + わけではない

Meaning

it is not that...; not necessarily...

Structure

plain form + わけではない

Explanation

わけではない denies a possible interpretation: “it is not that...” It often gives a partial denial rather than rejecting the whole situation.

Usage

It often appears with が or ただ, first denying a misunderstanding and then adding the real reason or limitation.

Example

日本語が嫌いなわけではありませんが、漢字を覚えるのに時間がかかります。

It is not that I dislike Japanese; it just takes time to memorize kanji.

Common Mistake

Do not read it as a total denial. 嫌いなわけではない means “it is not that I dislike it,” while another difficulty may still exist.

Memory Tip

Remember it as “that is not the reason” or “that is not quite what it means.”
