JLPT N2 Grammar

N2Negation

N2 · Negation · verb

Meaning

could not; was not allowed to, because of duty or circumstances

Structure

Explanation

わけにはいかなかった is the past form of わけにはいかない and means that circumstances, duty, or position did not allow the action at that time.

Usage

Use it when looking back on a past restriction. It follows the dictionary form, not the nai-form.

Example

As the person in charge, I could not stay silent after learning about the problem.

Common Mistake

Do not read the past form as simple lack of ability; it means the situation or responsibility did not allow it.

Memory Tip
