plain form + わけ

わけ expresses the reason, background, or logic behind a situation, similar to “the reason why” or “how it came about.”

It is often followed by だ, です, or が分かる when explaining the reason or background of something.

彼が遅れたわけを、あとで先生に説明しました。

I later explained to the teacher why he was late.

Do not confuse the noun わけ with patterns like わけだ or わけではない; here it simply means a reason or background.

First remember わけ as “reason,” then extend it to patterns such as わけだ and わけではない.
