Explanation

Marks an event, activity, or action as the beginning of a series. The following part usually describes continuation or expansion.

Usage

Common in news, event schedules, tours, reforms, campaigns, and other series of developments.

Example

東京公演を皮切りに、全国ツアーが始まった。

Starting with the Tokyo performance, the nationwide tour began.

Common Mistake

Do not use it for a one-off event with no following development.

Memory Tip

皮切り is the first cut that opens up a whole sequence.
