を通して means obtaining a result through a person, organization, experience, or medium.

It is common with learning, communication, and experience.

留学を通して、多くの友人ができました。

Through studying abroad, I made many friends.

Do not confuse it with を通る, which means pass through a place.

Memorize “noun + を通して” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
