んです explains background or reason and gives the sentence an explanatory tone.

Use なんです after nouns and na-adjectives.

電車が遅れたんです。

The train was delayed, you see.

Do not attach んです mechanically to every sentence; it needs explanatory context.

んです feels like adding 'the thing is...'
