んです adds an explanatory tone or gives background/reason.

Use なんです after nouns and na-adjectives.

すみません、電車が遅れたんです。

Sorry, the train was delayed.

Do not add it mechanically without explanatory context.

Memorize “〜んです” as one fixed chunk, then practice by replacing words in the example sentence. Learn the connection first, then the nuance.
