masu-stem verb + 得ない

Explanation

得ない means something is not possible from the standpoint of possibility; it is read えない.

Usage

It appears in expressions such as あり得ない and 考え得ない.

Example

専門家の確認なしに、この結論は認め得ない。

Without expert confirmation, this conclusion cannot be accepted.

Common Mistake

Do not read it as うない; the negative form is usually read えない.

Memory Tip

Possible is 得る; impossible is 得ない.
