Attached to verbs, it shows failing to do an action properly, doing it badly, or nearly doing something; alone it can mean harm.

損ねる is common, while 損じる is written; depending on the verb it may mean miss, fail, or nearly.

大事なメールの宛先を書き損ねて、別の人に送ってしまった。

I wrote the wrong recipient for an important email and sent it to someone else.

Do not understand it only as financial loss; after a verb, the focus is failing to perform the action properly.

The action should have been completed, but something went wrong near the end.
