Explanation

Shows that something happens right in the middle of an ongoing action or event, often unexpectedly.

Usage

Emphasizes being in progress more strongly than とき.

Example

会議の最中に、急に火災ベルが鳴り出した。

Right in the middle of the meeting, the fire alarm suddenly started ringing.

Common Mistake

Do not use it before an action starts or after it ends; it must be during the action.
