JLPT N2 Grammar

申す

N2Honorifics

N2 · Honorifics · noun + と申す / 内容 + と申す

Meaning

to be called; to say, humble form of 言う

Structure

noun + と申す / 内容 + と申す

Explanation

申す is the humble form of 言う. It is used to introduce one's name or affiliation, or to humbly state something from one's own side.

Usage

〜と申します is common in self-introductions. Do not use it to honor someone else's speech.

Example

私は営業部の田中と申します。

My name is Tanaka from the sales department.

Common Mistake

Do not say 先生が申しました for what a teacher said; use おっしゃいました.

Memory Tip

申す lowers the speaker's own act of saying.
