終わる attaches to a verb stem and means finishing an action.

Common forms include 読み終わる, 書き終わる, and 食べ終わる.

レポートを書き終わりました。

I finished writing the report.

Do not say 書いて終わる for 'finish writing'; the pattern is stem + 終わる.

Add 終わる to the stem and the action reaches its endpoint.
