Explanation

The dictionary form is the form used in dictionaries and also the plain non-past affirmative form.

Usage

Many patterns attach to the dictionary form, such as ことができる and 前に.

Example

寝る前に本を読む。

I read a book before sleeping.

Common Mistake

Do not substitute the ます form where a dictionary form is required.

Memory Tip

The forms you find in dictionaries, like 読む, 食べる, and する, are dictionary forms.
